As British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once wrote, Sherlock Holmes’ business is to know what other people don’t know. Arguably the most famous of all fictional detectives, Sherlock Holmes was known for his proficiency with observation, forensic science and logical reasoning that bordered on the fantastic. The Iowa City Public Library will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the publication of Doyle’s “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” with a series of programs that honor the detective in all media, from short stories and novels to television and film.

The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation is now accepting donations of handmade arts and crafts for the Sixth Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar. This year’s bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 2, in Meeting Room A. Proceeds from the sale support the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation to benefit Library programs and collections.

The Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile won’t be in service August 21 through August 25 because of scheduled vehicle maintenance, collection updates, and staff training. During the Bookmobile’s seasonal break in service, items can be returned at the downtown Library or to the Library’s remote drop boxes. Holds that arrive at the Library during this time can be found by inquiring at the Help Desk at the downtown Library or on the Bookmobile when our Fall Schedule begins.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation partnered with the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning and StarNet to provide a limited number of solar eclipse glasses to the Iowa City Public Library as part of their mission is to provide low-cost resources to allow Americans to engage in science. Two-hundred pairs of glasses will be distributed, one per person at the Help Desk on Saturday, August 19, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The quantity is limited to one pair per person and will be distributed on a “while supplies last” basis.

The Iowa City Public Library has teamed up with the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department for a special storytime event on Thursday, August 17, at the historic log cabins at Upper City Park, 200 East Park Road, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The program will include stories, games, pioneer crafts and songs. The Bookmobile will also be on site. For more information, call the Library at 319-356-5200.

In the event of a life threatening emergency like a heart attack or choking, every minute before help arrives is important. What do you do after calling 911? Hands-only CPR, use of an Automated External Defibrillator and choking response can be learned in as little as 30 minutes. Johnson County Ambulance will provide 30-minute CPR training at the Iowa City Public Library on Tuesday, August 15, in Meeting Room A.
