Bring the excitement of an Iowa City Public Library storytime home with our Read With Me Kits. The Library has more than 40 kits available to checkout. Each kit was built around a specific theme and contains five books, a storytime starter sheet, and an activity item that coincides with the theme. Activity items vary by kit. Themes include opposites, trains, unicorns, construction, family, cats, and shapes.

The community is invited to join the Iowa City Public Library from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, as we say farewell to long-time Iowa City Police Department Downtown Liaison Officer David Schwindt. During this time, we’ll also welcome Officer Colin Fowler, who will step into the position. Officer David Schwindt was hired by the Iowa City Police Department in January 2001. For his first 12 years he worked on patrol and as a Field Training Officer. In 2013 he was selected to be the first Downtown Liaison Officer.

The Iowa City Public Library invites children interested in the performing arts to visit ICPL Sunday afternoons for October Improv! Using a variety of drama techniques to bring popular children’s stories to life, October Improv! will explore the many ways there are to tell stories, and how actors can experience the character, action, and themes inside of stories. These weekly drama sessions will be led by AmyRuth McGraw and students from the University of Iowa’s Drama in the Classroom course as part of Sunday Fun Day. Sunday, October 1: “Caps for Sale”

Parents expecting the pitter-patter of little feet are invited to the Iowa City Public Library’s Belly Babies, a new program for parents-to-be. Beginning October 7 and continuing through November 18, Belly Babies will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. every Saturday in the Storytime Room. Belly Babies will not meet on November 11 because of the Totally Tweens Chess Tournament.

Not sure what to do with your solar eclipse glasses? Bring them to the Iowa City Public Library! The Library is an official Glasses Collection Center Astronomers Without Borders and its corporate sponsor, Explore Scientific. All collected solar eclipse glasses will be distributed in schools, libraries and other institutions in South America and Asia for use in the next two years. Please drop off your glasses in the collection box, located near the indoor book returns on the Library’s first floor. Glasses will be collected until November 1.

The Iowa City Public Library and the University of Iowa’s Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program have come together to offer job application, resume writing, and job skills workshops on Wednesdays beginning September 27. Participants can get help from graduate level students to fill out online job applications, build resumes, and develop interview skills.

The Iowa City Public Library will host a discussion about the 2017 One Community, One Book selection from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 23, in Meeting Room A. This year’s selection is “The Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman’s Journey to Love and Islam” by G. Willow Wilson. Praised as “an eye-opening look at a misunderstood and often polarizing faith” by Booklist, “The Butterfly Mosque” is Wilson’s story of converting to Islam and falling in love with an Egyptian man in a volatile post-9/11 world.

The Iowa City Public Library, with support from the Friends Foundation, is excited to host Brooke Gladstone of WNYC's On the Media and author of “The Trouble with Reality,” during this year's Intellectual Freedom Festival. Gladstone will give a presentation about fake news and the media on Sunday, September 24, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the Englert Theatre. She will be joined by Lyle Muller, executive director of IowaWatch.org, the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism.

The Iowa City Public Library‘s 2017 Carol Spaziani Intellectual Freedom Festival begins Sunday, September 17. Named for former librarian Carol Spaziani in honor of her life-long commitment to the freedom of ideas, this an annual event affirms everyone's right to freedom of thought and expression. This year’s Intellectual Freedom Festival includes the following programs: Sunday, September 17, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Sunday Fun Day -- Kids Blackout Poetry and Very, Very Short Stories
