The Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile’s fall schedule ends on Thursday, December 20. The Bookmobile won’t be in service December 21 through January 6 because of scheduled vehicle maintenance, collection updates, and staff training. During the Bookmobile’s seasonal break in service, items can be returned at the downtown Library or to the Library’s remote drop boxes. Holds that arrive at the Library during this time can be found by inquiring at the Help Desk at the downtown Library or on the Bookmobile when our Winter/Spring Schedule begins.

The Bookmobile will be on winter Service Break from Monday, December 24, through Friday, January 4. During this break, the Bookmobile will undergo vehicle maintenance, deep cleaning, and restocking the shelves with great new Library materials.

Registration for the Iowa City Public Library’s Sweet Reads Winter Reading Program begins December 17. Available for young readers ages three through 12, the program will help children pass the winter hours when it’s too cold to play outdoors. It will run from December 17 through February 2. Kids who read and track 10 books on their reading log will receive a small sweet treat. Anyone who reads and tracks an additional 10 books, for a total of 20 books, will receive a free kids’ meal at Chili’s Grill & Bar in Coralville.

The Iowa City Public Library will be home to a Literary Kiosk in December. The result of a partnership between University of Iowa Libraries and the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, the kiosk allows on-demand printing of short prose or poetry works.

The Iowa City Public Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the hiring of the next library director: Elsworth Carman. Carman has extensive public library experience and served most recently as the Director of the Marion Public Library. He received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Information Studies. Carman was selected from three finalists following a nationwide search conducted by Bradbury Associates of Kansas City, Mo. He’ll succeed Susan Craig, who will retire at the end of the year.

The Iowa City Public Library will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, so individuals with autism can enjoy the Library in a calm and welcoming environment. ICPL’s Special Access Browsing Hour is open to individuals of all ages on the autism spectrum, as well as their family members and caregivers. November’s special access browsing hour will include a visit from Miss Patty, dino expert from the Putnam Museum in Davenport. She will share the latest dinosaur facts and paleontology discoveries as part of our DINOvember celebration.
