The Iowa City Public Library Friend Foundation invites the public to attend a retirement reception for Susan Craig on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Meeting Room A. There will be a brief program at 1:30 p.m. Craig will retire from the Library on Dec. 28 after 41 years of service. She started as an Information Librarian at ICPL in 1977 before taking over as Technical Services Coordinator in 1982. Craig was named the Library’s Assistant Director in 1986, a title she maintained until she was hired as ICPL’s Director in 1994.

The three finalists for Iowa City Public Library’s Director will participate in a public forum from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in Meeting Room A at ICPL, 123 S. Linn St. The Candidate Forum is hosted by the ICPL Friends Foundation and is open to the public. The finalists will be named at the Library’s Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, Oct. 25. The Board expects to hire a new director in November, who will begin working in January of 2019.

The Iowa City Public Library’s Totally Tweens Chess Tournament will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 17, in Meeting Room A at the Library, 123 S. Linn St. A staple of the Library’s tween programming, the tournament is held in honor of Steve Young, who was active in the community’s chess population until his death in 2012. The tournament is open to students in third through sixth grades. Members of the United State Chess Federation (USCF) below third grade also are welcome. Players rated over USCF 1,000 will be in a separate section.

We Can Code, a workshop for teens to explore the basics of computer programming and web development in a self-paced, example-driven, supportive environment, returns to the Iowa City Public Library on Oct. 6. We Can Code will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Library’s Digital Media Lab on the second floor every Saturday in October. The workshop is open to teens in grades 7 through 12. The Iowa City Public Library’s Westgate Collection will be part of the Downtown District Gallery Walk from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 5. The Westgate Collection features original children’s book art by well-known illustrators, including Dr. Seuss, Charles Schulz, and Margret and H.A. Rey, as well as local artists Claudia McGehee and Jennifer Black Reinhardt. Illustrations by McGehee and Reinhardt are our newest additions to the collection, and both artists will be present during the Gallery Walk.

The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation is now accepting donations of handmade arts and crafts for the Seventh Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar. This year’s bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 8, in Meeting Room A. Proceeds from the sale support the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation to benefit Library programs and collections. Those wishing to donate items may bring them to the Library during open hours before Thursday, December 6.

September is Library Card Sign Up Month. If you don’t have a Library Card, now is the time to get one. Use your Library Card to check out books, movies, videogames, framed art, laptop computers, and music; access databases; explore the Library’s digital collection, including eBooks and audio books, and digital magazines; and get connected to the Library’s on-site public computer stations.
