Can I recycle my Christmas Lights?

Just in time for the holidays, the City of Iowa City sent a media release today (below) with information about recycling holiday lights. Recycling is available through January 9th. I don't know about you, but holiday lights are something I find beautiful ... and frustrating. I'm glad to know there's an option when the lights don't work. Happy Holidays!

From the City's Media Release:
Don’t throw your old holiday lights away…recycle them!
As you're putting up or taking down your holiday decorations this year, remember that strings of holiday lights that no longer work don’t have to be thrown away -- they can be recycled! Although they can't be set out for curbside recycling, holiday lights that you want to dispose of may be dropped off in special collection bins that have been set up throughout Iowa City and Coralville.

The string light recycling program will run through Monday, January 9, 2017. Do not place packaging or other holiday decorations in these special bins, as only the strings of lights can be recycled. Bins will be set out for collection in the following locations:

Iowa City:

  • Hy-Vee South, Waterfront Drive (container will be in the vestibule)
  • Hy-Vee East, First Avenue (container will be in the vestibule)
  • Hy-Vee, North Dodge Street (container will be in the can redemption center area)
  • Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, 3900 Hebl Avenue SW (stop at scale)
  • ReStore, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE (north donation entrance)
  • Stuff Etc. (1027 Highway 6)

Please contact the Iowa City Recycling Coordinator at 319-887-6160 with questions.
