Join Iowa City Public Library as we celebrate all things musical with Music is the Word. MusicistheWord

This special series of programming, to continue through May 2016, welcomes the University of Iowa School of Music building to downtown Iowa City. Here’s what’s happening in December:

7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Gymnastics Room: Yahoo Drummers. This Family Drumming Session at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center will have families exploring and playing percussion instruments from all over the world. No fee; no registration required.

7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, in Meeting Room A: Documentary Screening – “Under the Boardwalk - A Ukulele Love Story.” This documentary chronicles the history, community, and joyous spirit of the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. (2011) 75 min. This event is cosponsored by Ukulele Social Club of Johnson County.

Noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in Meeting Room A: Music on Wednesday @ICPL with Preucil School of Music. Join musicians from the Preucil School of Music as they share their joy in music performance.

10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, in Meeting Room A: Preschool Storytime – Christmas Sing-Along. Are you looking forward to letting it snow and building a frosty snowman of your own? Stop by preschool storytime today to sing classic secular Christmas and winter songs!

5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at The Mill: B.Y.O.Book – “Musicophilia” by Oliver Sacks. Join us to discuss "Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain" by Oliver Sacks. Registration is encouraged due to space limitations. Limited copies of the book will be available for check out from the Info Desk staff on the Library’s second floor.

7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, in Meeting Room A: Documentary Screening – “Don't Think I've Forgotten - Cambodia's Lost Rock & Roll.” This documentary tracks the twists and turns of Cambodian music as it morphs into rock and roll, blossoms, and is nearly destroyed along with the rest of the country. (2014) 105 min

10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in Meeting Room A: Family Concert – Matthew Coley. Professional marimba player and organizer of the Heartland Marimba Festival, Matthew Coley, will lead a special family storytime. Outlining the history of the marimba, he will perform music from different cultures and ages.

1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in Meeting Room A: Concert – Matthew Coley. This concert will feature familiar classics for the holiday season as well as other famous tunes.

2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, in Meeting Room A: Cocoa and Carols with Combined Efforts Theatre Men's Choir. Gather your friends to sing along with the talented singers from Combined Efforts Theatre Men's Choir, and enjoy a cup of cocoa and a cookie provided by The Java House.

Noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, in the Storytime Room: Sing-Along – “The Muppets Christmas Carol.” Celebrate the season by watching The Muppets retell the Charles Dickens classic about a bitter man finding redemption on Christmas Eve.
