Without the ability to browse the shelves at the library it is easy to feel adrift in finding your latest read. I also miss shelving holds at the Help Desk between helping people because that clues me into the hot items. Other than some of the ace recommendations offered by your favorite Iowa City Public Library employees there are a wide variety of places to find your favorite book of the season.

In response to the joint Mayors’ statement yesterday (https://tinyurl.com/wllupdg), and in continuation of our efforts to align with best practices in reducing the spread of COVID-19, the Iowa City Public Library is releasing most staff from on-site work assignments through at least April 12. Telephone service will be temporarily suspended starting at noon today; watch for updates related to the reestablishment of this service.

While the Iowa City Public Library is closed in response to COVID-19, and our Bookmobile is social distancing under the College Street bridge, staff are still hard at work. From answering questions over the phone, email, and chat, endeavoring some cleaning projects back at the building, inventorying the collection...we're staying busy trying to reach our community in these swiftly changing times but also looking ahead to continue to bring Iowa City the best we have to offer.

Beginning Friday March 20 at 1:00 pm, the Iowa City Public Library will suspend remote book return service. Book returns located at GreenState Credit Union, 825 Mormon Trek Blvd. and First Avenue Hy-Vee, 812 S. 1st Ave., will be locked and not accessible beginning Friday afternoon. While the Library is closed, we encourage community members to keep all Library materials until we reopen. No items will be due and no fines will accrue while the Library is closed. Items on Hold will not expire and will be available when the Library reopens.

If you have been on the 2nd floor of the library lately and been all the way back to the blue North wall, you may have had the opportunity to checkout one of the most unique displays to be hosted at the Iowa City Public Library. This display, or exhibition, is the work of MFA student in Book Arts at the University of Iowa India Johnson, and is Thread Library. This library within our library is a collection of threads, with an accompanying card catalog.
