Sign up today for the new ICPL Kids Tech Club

KidsTechClub2012 The Iowa City Public Library is pleased to offer the Kids Tech Club for fourth- through sixth-graders interested in technology and Web-based learning, Wednesdays, October 10-November 14. The Kids Tech Club aims to offer children a way to learn new skills while making new friends. Activities will include making avatars, animation, and programs that allow children to manipulate images and sounds.

Kids can also learn from each other in this unique club, which can adjust each week’s topics based on the interests of the group. Being a member of the Club gives children an opportunity for hands-on experiences with new technology, independent of opportunities they may have at home or at school.

“Computer literacy is an increasingly important skill,” said Librarian Andrea Flemming. “The Kids Tech Club is an opportunity to not only learn technology skills, but also for children to share what they know with each other. While iPads and flip cameras will be used, the focus will be on Web-based tools so that the children are more likely to be able to use them on their own, either at home or on the Library’s public computers.”

Participants can take what they learn and practice their new skills at the Library or on computers at home. Free Internet, application software, and educational game access for children (preschool through 6th grade) is available at public computers located in the Children’s Room on the first floor of the Library.

Registration began September 4. Due to growing demand and limited space, registration for past Tech Club participants does not begin until October 1.
