Are you a strong advocate for the Iowa City Public Library? Would you like to be involved in the governance of ICPL?
The Library Board has one vacancy for a special term (starting upon appointment and continuing through June 30, 2027). Applications can be accessed via https://www.icgov.org/city-government/boards-commissions-and-committees and are due back by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.
Serving on the Library Board is a significant commitment. It includes, at a minimum, preparing for and attending monthly meetings (which generally run between one and two hours). During substantial projects (like building projects or strategic planning), there may be more frequent meetings, as well as enhanced expectations around participation in committees or workgroups.
The returns are also considerable. Being part of the Board of Trustees puts you in a position to help guide the Library forward through influencing the strategic plan, budgeting practices, evaluating the Director, and representing the community at the ICPL decision-making table.
If this sounds like a fit for you, consider observing a Board meeting (https://www.icpl.org/about/board), reaching out to a current Board member with questions, or reading past agendas and meeting minutes online.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside in Iowa City, but previous Board or Commission experience is not mandatory, there is no minimum educational requirement, and you do not need to be a library expert to apply. You do need to be willing to learn; work as part of a team; make decisions about library policies, initiatives, and budgets; and advocate for the Library in the community.
While everyone within the residency and age requirement is welcome to apply, we are in specific need of BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and other applicants who will help our Board represent the whole Iowa City community.
