January children's events to include author visit, mug-painting workshop, play and concert


SarahP The Iowa City Public Library is pleased to announce the following upcoming winter programs that offer young students opportunities to get excited about reading, local authors and the arts. From 1-2 p.m. this Saturday, January 7, ICPL will once again welcome children’s author Sarah Prineas for a special meet-the-author event. Students can meet the local author of The Magic Thief series at the Library and hear her talk about her books, including her new book “Winterling,” a children’s fantasy novel geared for ages 10 and up.

Events this month also include a paint-a-mug workshop with Fired Up of Iowa City, a Kidspectacular play and a Pied Piper concert with Orchestra Iowa. Get event more special events listings here.

The Library is also pleased to be involved in the free Children’s Book Expo, a fun-filled day at the Iowa City Sheraton on January 14, part of the UNESCO City of Literature’s Children’s Literature Festival next weekend. More info can be found below, as well as is in the flyers attached here.

Saturday Special: Meet Local Author Sarah Prineas
Come and meet Iowa City children's author, Sarah Prineas, author of The Magic Thief series. She will read from her newest fantasy, Winterling, geared for ages 10 and up plus talk about her writing process and background information. Books will be available to purchase at the door and Sarah will be available for book signing after the program. Free. No registration. Geared for children in third grade and older. Adults would also enjoy her presentation and are welcome to attend.

mug Fired Up Paint a Pot Workshop
Children in Grades 3-6 are invited to paint a mug with our friends from Fired Up. Free but sign-up is required by calling the Children's Desk at 356-5200. Ceramic items will be available to pick up January 23 at Fired Up, 520 E Washington, St., Iowa City.

Reading2 Family Special: "The Practically Perfect Frog Prince" with Kidspectacular
There's trouble in the kingdom as Princess Adeline tries to shake Freddie the Frog who is in hot pursuit of his Sweet Baboo. Followed by a wedding, and a Sno-Much Fun Winter Carnival complete with refreshments, duck pond, and prizes.

Orchestra Iowa-color Family Special: Pied Piper Concert with Orchestra Iowa
Featuring classical music for children played by a percussion ensemble, this concert is one of the Pied Piper Series and co-sponsored by Orchestra Iowa and the Iowa City Public library.
Family Specials are designed for the whole family and presented at a time convenient for most working parents. They are recommended for all ages, but parents are asked to sit with their younger children.
