Details: In honor of Charles Dickens’ 200th Birthday, the Iowa City Public Library will hold a panel discussion on Charles Dickens, his novel Oliver Twist, and how his work continues to speak to the issues our community faces today. Cake and refreshments to follow. Panelists include: Teresa Mangum, Professor of Victorian Literature in the University of Iowa English Department Jeffrey Cox, Professor of British Social, Imperial, and Religious History in the University of Iowa History Department Miriam Gilbert, Professor of Shakespeare, drama, and performance criticism in the University of Iowa English Department Sarah Benson Witry, Food Bank and Emergency Assistance Director at The Crisis Center of Johnson County In addition, Gregory Prickman, UI Special Collections Librarian, will assemble a small exhibit of Dickensiana. We welcome attendees to bring a jar of peanut butter to donate to the Food Bank of The Crisis Center of Johnson County. Spread the love! Event is part of the “Conversations and Controversies” Book Discussion Group. Dickens 101 is also the kickoff to a community reading of Oliver Twist. A book discussion of the novel will take place Monday, March 5th at 7 pm at the Iowa City Public Library in Meeting Room A. The VITA program is designed to provide free tax assistance at community locations to individuals who cannot afford professional tax help. Volunteers assist people with simple tax returns. You must bring a copy of your 2010 Federal and Iowa income tax returns if you have filed those tax returns. You must also bring any pertinent interest and withholding statements and all receipts to document deductions you claim. You CANNOT use this service if: You are single or married and your gross income exceeds $50,000; You are self-employed; You have sold securities (stocks and bonds) in 2011; You have earned income from other states - i.e. non-Iowa sources of income; You are a non-resident of the United States. Details: Join the fun at the 15th annual Iowa City Spells Adult Spelling Bee. This event is a fundraiser for the Iowa City Public Library hosted by the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation. Pre-registered teams of three will compete for the Iowa City Spells Trophy and other prizes. Hands Jewelers is the Event Sponsor, and owner Bill Nusser will be the Master of Ceremonies with Jennifer Whitmore. There will be a special Audience Spelling competition as well as lots of fun during the evening.
