Patrick Taylor's newest addition to the "Irish Country Books" series takes readers back to the Dublin medical school days of the series' hero Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly. Fans of the series, and especially An Irish Country Girl , will enjoy stories about the formative years of Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly.
Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly's father named his son after Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (Oscar Wilde) and has aspirations for his son to be a professor. This puts a wedge between father and son because Fingal has aspirations to be a medical doctor. Because of the disagreement, Fingal's father refuses to pay for his education; consequently, Fingal's education is postponed while he works to save money for his education.
The book opens as Fingal begins his formal medical studies and continues through his certification as a medical doctor. Along the way, Fingal meets memorable characters and solidifies his conviction that he wants to make a difference in the lives of the patients he cares for. Readers of the series come to know Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly in a new way and understand how his formative years shaped the character readers know and love.
I've thoroughly enjoyed these books and the vicarious travel to Ireland I experience whenever I read or listen to one of the books. In past posts I've described the books as the Irish mix of James Herriot and Marcus Welby, MD and those themes continue in this book. If you are looking for a vicarious escape, I'd recommend picking up one of the books in the "Irish Country Books" series. ~~Enjoy!~~
