In the fall of 2008, a choir of volunteer performers formed with the goal of offering songs of healing and comfort to those struggling with living or dying.
For nearly seven years, Morning Star Singers have performed for free at hospices, hospitals, nursing homes and private homes within the Twin Cities.
Founder Barbara McAfee says it was her experience singing at the bedsides of friends and family that inspired her to create Morning Star Singers. A voice coach, singer/songwriter, keynote speaker, and author, McAfee travels the world to speak about the power of music to build, heal, and transform communities, big or small.
McAfee will be at the Iowa City Public Library from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, in Meeting Room A to describe the concept of a comfort choir and share the story of the Morning Star Singers. She also will teach simple songs and share some of her experiences singing for the ill, dying or bereaved.
This presentation is the opportunity to join a lively community of vocal explorers, experience literal and metaphorical harmony, and an enhanced feeling of unity and connection through music.
Songs for Healing and Hope is open to the public. It will be broadcast live on The Library Channel, Iowa City cable channel 20.
