ICPL to Introduce Lobby Grab and Go Service

The Iowa City Public Library will begin offering Lobby Grab and Go service Tuesday, October 6, welcoming patrons back into the building's lobby to pick up holds.

After placing a hold through the Library’s catalog, patrons will be notified when their materials are ready for in person pick-up. Unlike curbside services, which conclude on Monday, October 5, no appointment will be necessary to pick up materials inside the lobby. In accordance with municipal and county mandates, all individuals in the Library are required to wear masks and maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet. Hand sanitizer and masks will be available to members of the public. In addition, staff will have plexiglass barriers and surface cleaners on hand.

“This will allow us to serve more patrons than the initial curbside site did, as well as being more sustainable as a service location,” Library Director Elsworth Carman said. “I’m pleased to continue expanding services and am eager to welcome patrons back into the lobby.”

The lobby will be accessible from the Linn Street entrance Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for express service. Staff will take the patron’s library card or card number, pull items from the hold shelf, check them out, and place them on a table for patrons to pick up, providing a contact free interaction between staff and the public.

“The user experience will continue to be very different than before the COVID-19 closure, and I would like to thank our patrons in advance for their patience and flexibility as we try something new,” Carman said. “I look forward to hearing from users about how the new service model works for them and using collected feedback in future changes.”
