Snowman socks, reindeer games and gingerbread fun are among the programs and events the Iowa City Public Library’s Children Room has planned during December. Our calendar is stuffed with things to do, see and make all month long!

Wednesday, December 7, 10:30 a.m. in Meeting Room A: Preschool Storytime – Winter Sing-Along

Bring your best caroling voice, and get ready to interact with instruments, stories and winter fun! Whether there's snow on the ground yet or not, stick around for an indoor snowball fight to end the program!

Sunday, December 11, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Sunday Fun Day – Sock Snowmen

Using socks and rice, we’ll transform ordinary objects into a snowy friend. Come make a cute little snowman friend to keep you cheerful all winter long!

Thursday, December 15, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room A: Dance Me a Story – The Nutcracker with Ballet Quad Cities

Dance Me a Story ties together ballet performances and the literature that inspires the choreography. Participants first learn how the literature inspires the choreographer and dancers, then see costumes, head pieces, props and pointe shoes—all important elements to bring the story to life.

Saturday, December 17, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room A: The Sounds of the Holidays – Regina Orchestra & Choir

Join us for a special holiday performance presented by the choir and orchestra students of Regina High School as they share some of the festive pieces they’ve been working on this season.

Sunday, December 18, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Sunday Fun Day – Reindeer Games

We’ll show Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and have tables filled with reindeer crafts and activities.

Wednesday, December 21, 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Meeting Room A: Preschool Storytime – The Snowman

Join us as we explore Raymond Briggs’ wordless classic: The Snowman.

Thursday, December 22, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Gingerbread Fun Storytime!

Celebrate the first morning of winter break with a gingerbread-theme storytime that will include winter stories, gingerbread making, and holiday crafts for all ages.

Thursday, December 22, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Flair to Share – Wearable Gifts

Join us we make buttons, friendship bracelets, headbands, keychains, earrings, ornaments, and more! All supplies will be provided.

Friday, December 23, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Make Your Own Ornament

Visit our Ornament Bar on your first day of winter break. We’ll have tons of craft supplies available for you to stuff or decorate your own clear plastic ball ornament.

Saturday, December 24, 10:30 a.m. to Noon in the Storytime Room: The Muppets Christmas Carol

Join us for a screening of The Muppets Christmas Carol.

Tuesday, December 27, 2 to 4 p.m. in Meeting Room A: Winter Break Legos

Bring your building skills and creativity to this all-ages winter break activity.

Thursday, December 29, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Storytime Room: The Secret Life of Pets

Join us for a screening of The Secret Life of Pets.

Saturday, December 31, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room: Noon Year’s Eve Party

Is midnight too late? We’ve got you covered! Join us as we count down to noon instead. This family-friendly celebration includes a balloon drop, crafts, dancing and treats.
