Are you curious about starting a new hobby or trying an exciting activity but hesitant to invest in all the supplies? The Iowa City Public Library’s Discovery Kits are here to help! These hands-on kits make it easy to explore new interests, hobbies, and experiences without the upfront cost.

Each Discovery Kit is thoughtfully curated with all the tools and resources you need to dive in. Whether you’re exploring Iowa’s natural beauty, learning to knit, or picking up a paddle for a game of pickleball, these kits let you try before you buy, ensuring your time is spent on meaningful experiences, not wasted purchases.

What’s Inside the Kits?
From hobbies and crafts to outdoor adventures and STEM activities, Discovery Kits cover a wide variety of interests. Here’s just a glimpse of what’s available:

• Get Creative: Knitting, Crocheting, Cookie & Cake Decorating
• Explore the Outdoors: Bird Watching, Hiking & Nature, Stargazing
• Learn Something New: Microscope, Gravity & Motion, Coding
• Try a New Sport: Pickleball, Disc Golf
• Family Fun: Chess & Checkers, Fabulous Five Senses, Bugs & Insects
• Practical Skills: Home Energy Efficiency, Bike Tool Kit

Each kit includes everything needed to get started, whether it’s books, tools, or activity supplies. For example, the Pickleball Kit includes paddles, balls, and an instructional book, so you’re ready to hit the court.

Who Can Use Discovery Kits?
With kits designed for children, teens, and adults, there’s something for everyone. From rock collecting and bocce ball for younger explorers to crocheting and exploring Iowa for adults, these kits are perfect for individuals, families, and groups looking to try something new.

How It Works:

• Check Out: Discovery Kits can be borrowed for three weeks, with no renewals.
• One at a Time: Patrons may check out one kit at a time.
• Get Started: Pick up your kit, bring it home, and enjoy!

This collection was made possible with the generous support of a $1,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Johnson County, which helped create a collection of 21 kits to inspire and engage patrons of all ages.
