VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

Free tax help and filing for qualifying individuals and families is offered by VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) through Johnson County Social Services.  There are two ways to use their service:

  • Schedule an appointment to have your tax return completed by an IRS certified tax preparer. 
    OR
  • Use VITA's software to prepare and file your own federal and state returns online for FREE anytime, anywhere if your household income was less than $64,000 in 2023. Email fileforfree@johnsoncountyiowa.gov to receive a link to the online software. In-person tax assistance from IRS-certified tax preparers while you use dedicated computer stations is available at the Iowa City Public Library on Mondays 2 – 8 pm, Wednesdays 2 - 8pm, and Saturdays 11 – 5 pm. This service runs from February 1 - April 14.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program at the Senior Center

Free tax preparation services are offered to seniors at the Iowa City Senior Center. Call the Senior Center at (319) 356-5220 or visit their online sign-up to set an appointment, starting in February.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center

The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in Davenport can address complex tax issues not found on the IRS website. Visit them at 101 W. 2nd St, Davenport, IA 52801 or call at (844) 545-5640.

Can I get printed forms from the library?

Yes! You can pick up an Iowa 1040 form on the 2nd floor of the library for free.

Ask Info Desk staff to print other Iowa forms (for free) and instructions (for 10¢ per page) for you.

Deadline for Iowa taxes

April 30, 2025 is the deadline to file Iowa returns for tax year 2024 (January 1 - December 31, 2024).
