02/19/2021 10:00am 02/19/2021 11:00am Totally Tweens: Alma Thomas Color Field Painting Alma Thomas, a Black American artist who lived from 1891 to 1978, was the first graduate of Howard University's Fine Arts program in 1924 and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. She is best known for the colorful abstract expressionist paintings she created in her 80s, after retiring from a 35-year career teaching art at a segregated public junior high school in Washington, D.C. Those who register for this program will receive supplies so that they may create a painting of their own in the style of Alma Thomas' best known works. Participants will also receive a booklet with more information about Thomas' life, her creative process, and artistic philosophy, to use as inspiration for their own work. Finally, participants are asked to email a photo of their finished painting to the library, and those who do will be entered to win one of several "door prizes": copies of #ownvoices middle-grade books by Black authors, which will be mailed to the winners. Please note there is no Zoom component for this event. This is a take-and-make bag for you to enjoy at your leisure. The bags will be available for those who've registered to pick up anytime the library is open from February 19-25. This program is for children in grades 3-6.
