As more people opt for experiences over things, the Iowa City Public Library is pleased to present Discovery Kits, a collection of hands-on activities that allow patrons to “try before they buy” something new. “When people are trying to start a new hobby, there’s an investment in the tools or materials to make it a success,” ICPL Collections Coordinator Anne Mangano says.

During the month of March, the Iowa City Public Library will host classes that highlight the addition of Wacom Intuos graphics tablets to its selection of Digital Media Lab equipment. These tablets will allow users to hand-draw images, animations, graphics, and more on the computer. Library patrons can look forward to these arts-based classes to learn more about this exciting technology.

Come to Hy-Vee Drugstore/Wine & Spirits, 310 N First Avenue, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 15, for a wine and craft beer tasting fundraiser to benefit the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation. Adult beverage distributors will offer free samples of wine, beer and spirits at this drop-in event for Library friends, the public, and members of the HyVee Wine Tasting Club. Stop by to visit with friends as you try something new. HyVee will donate a percentage of the evening’s sales to the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation.

The Iowa City Book Festival, in partnership with the Iowa City Public Library, will host a series of events designed to bring the authors of books about politics and social engagement to the library to discuss the ideas in those books: LIT Talks. Building on the success of a similar track during the 2018 Iowa City Book Festival – including appearances by Ari Berman, Art Cullen, Dan Kauffman, and Silvia Hidalgo – the idea of LIT Talks is to shed light on the issues of the day and to promote the ongoing community dialogue about those topics.
