Have you ever wanted to award a prize to your new favorite book? Here’s your chance! Voting in the Iowa City Public Library’s Mock Caldecott Award begins Friday, December 1. Just in time for the holidays, the Iowa City Public Library will host the Sixth Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar and Holiday Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 2. Thanks to the generous donations of local artists and crafters, shoppers will find a wide selection of unique gifts from quilts and knitted items to jewelry, holiday ornaments, and more. For every $10 spent at the bazaar, shoppers receive an entry for amazing door prizes. Winners do not need to be present to win.

The Iowa City Public Library will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, so individuals with autism can enjoy the Library in a calm and welcoming environment. ICPL’s Special Access Browsing Hour is open to individuals of all ages on the autism spectrum, as well as their family members and caregivers.

It’s time for all Hamilton-obsessed teens to rise up and be heard. The Iowa City Public Library will host a Teen Hamilton Sing-Along from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, in Meeting Room A. Open to students in seventh through 12th-grades, attendees are encouraged to dress in their favorite Hamilton-inspired garb and sing along to award-winning musical. There also will be a trivia questions. Teens, don’t throw away your shot to have a great time at ICPL!

Here’s a novel idea: enjoy a meal out and support the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation at the same time. The Foundation has partnered with local restaurants for a new fundraising program: Eat Out to Read. Every Sunday in November from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., mention the Iowa City Public Library while enjoying brunch at Brix Cheese Shop and Wine Bar, 209 N. Linn St., and a percentage of your bill will be given to the Friends Foundation.

Tired of impulsively buying magazines at the grocery store? Save big bucks by downloading magazines for free through Digital Johnson County’s digital magazine collection. For more than a year, Coralville Public Library, Iowa City Public Library and the North Liberty Community Library have offered a combined digital magazine collection through RBdigital (formerly known as Zinio) to area residents. These magazines can be read on a computer, smartphone or tablet 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Iowa City Public Library’s Local Music Project website recently debuted a redesign that makes discovering local bands and performers even easier. The Local Music Project is a revolving collection of albums by eastern Iowa musicians. The redesign will allow users to stream music directly from the site. Users can still choose to download music they want, but it’s no longer the only option. The design is also mobile-friendly, making it easier to access local music on your smartphone or tablet.

The Iowa City Public Library’s Totally Tweens Chess Tournament will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 11, in Meeting Room A at the Library, 123 S. Linn St. A staple of the Library’s tween programming, the tournament is held in honor of Steve Young, who was active in the community’s chess population until his death in 2012. The tournament is open to students in third through sixth grades. Members of the United State Chess Federation (USCF) below third grade also are welcome. Players rated over USCF 1,000 will be in a separate section.

The Iowa City Public Library has partnered with The Iowa City Autism Community to host free a screening of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie from 4:15 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, in the Storytime Room. This movie will only be open to individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. No sign up is necessary to attend. We ask that snacks be peanut-free to accommodate allergies.
