Attention all Muggles! The Iowa City Public Library will host a Harry Potter Winter Party for students in fifth through eighth grades from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, in Meeting Room A. The celebration will begin with the sorting hat to determine participants’ houses. From there, the fun will include spell practice, trivia, potion making and a hidden Quidditch game. Snacks and beverages prepared by the Library’s house elves will be provided.

A new relationship, whether romantic or simply friendship, can be a fun way to liven up the dreary winter months after the holidays. The Iowa City Public Library is going to put on a series of classes on online dating. At the first session, learn about the online dating landscape from Tinder to OurTime. Compare different sites and their features to decide which ones might be worthwhile for your dating adventure and which aren’t. The class will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 12, in Meeting Room D.

The Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile’s fall schedule ends on Thursday, December 21. The Bookmobile won’t be in service December 22 through January 7 because of scheduled vehicle maintenance, collection updates, and staff training. During the Bookmobile’s seasonal break in service, items can be returned at the downtown Library or to the Library’s remote drop boxes. Holds that arrive at the Library during this time can be found by inquiring at the Help Desk at the downtown Library or on the Bookmobile when our Winter/Spring Schedule begins.

The finished items will be available for pickup at the Library Help Desk beginning Thursday, December 21. Due to the quick turnaround, shipping is not an option at this time.

Want to purchase a new gadget for Christmas but not sure which one to get? The Library will have a couple of classes to help patrons evaluate their options. Find out the important differences between e-readers and tablets at the “What Should I Buy?” class at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5 in Meeting Room D. A second class will be held on Friday, December 15, also at 10 a.m. One of the library's technology specialists will provide information about the most popular devices and answer your device questions.
