Libraries transform to meet the needs of their communities. Some of the earliest public libraries in the eastern U.S. included the word ‘free’ in their names to signal a shift from earlier models of libraries as private institutions, which charged membership fees and were typically accessible only to white, affluent men (Garrison, 1979). The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed segregation in public spaces, further expanded access to libraries.

"Iowa City's original female soccer player" will be returning to Iowa City for the Iowa City Public Library LibCon (think ComiCon, but smaller!) event on August 10, 2024! Now an acclaimed comic book author who runs the comic imprint Alpha Girl Comic, Chu also wrote the six-issue miniseries Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death and a few Wonder Woman issues for DC, with other works out through Marvel. 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of ago Amy's Title IX lawsuit which helped to establish women's soccer in Iowa City.
