VITA is back!
Free tax help and filing for qualifying individuals and families is offered by VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) through Johnson County Social Services.
This year, there are 2 ways to use their service:
1. Schedule an appointment to have your tax return completed by an IRS-certified tax preparer at the library while you sit with them.
OR
2. Use VITA's software to prepare and file your own federal and state tax returns online for FREE anytime, anywhere if your household income was less than $79,000 in 2023. Email fileforfree@johnsoncountyiowa.gov to get the link. For in-person assistance while you use the software, stop by one of these sessions:
- Iowa City Public Library, 2nd floor Digital Media Lab
- Drop-ins on Mondays 2-8pm and Saturdays 11-5pm
- February 10 - April 13
- You'll use a dedicated computer station and VITA's tax software to fill in your information
- IRS-certified tax preparers will be present to help with your questions and review your forms before they're filed electronically
More details, including the documents you'd need to bring for either service, are on the Johnson County Social Services VITA webpage.
