So, the big theme for this year's summer reading program (you've registered, right?) is "Groundbreaking Reads," and lots of the activities for the summer include learning about stuff beneath the surface, buried, underground, etc.

This article from CNN explores the often unknown adventures of the groundbreaking women in the fields of archaeology, paleontology, and geology; apparently, there are quite a few. Dorothea Bate, Harriet Boyd, Dorothy Garrod, Gertrude Caton-Thompson...and more, many of which are explored in the newly created Tumblr, Trowelblazers. It regularly features a new female archaeologist, paleontologist, or geologist, explaining their career, life, and inspiration:

"Because, you know what? Women - many, many women - have been wielding their trowels and awesome powers of discovery since archaeology and the like was invented. Awesome, trowel-wielding women, with this tumblr WE SALUTE YOU!"

You can submit a biography, pictures, or story, too! Swing by Trowelblazers, learn about some rock star women scientists of the past, and get inspired!
