Altered Books Exhibit & Silent Auction
Friday, June 6, 2008
4:00-7:00 p.m.
The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation invites you to be part of the fun during the Gallery Walk and Iowa Arts Festival! Come to the Library meeting rooms off the Lobby to see the special works created by members of the Iowa City community who donated them to be sold to benefit the Library.
What Are Altered Books
Altered books are an artistic interpretation of the role of the book in our lives. When altering a book—painting on it, writing over it or making sculpture from it—an artist transforms the meaning of the text in search of new meaning.
Whereas the book’s prior intention may have asked readers to enjoy the words on the page, here, an altered books asks to be “read” in a different manner. As a result, the viewer reconsiders the object of the books, and in doing so reconsiders its form, ideas, beauty and potential.
